Shopify app penetration testing

Shopify App Incident VAPT

$3,500Independent testingOne retest included

Respond to a security request with independent testing, a structured review of your available incident evidence and a clear plan for remediation.

01Context

When Shopify asks for an incident report and VAPT

Shopify may ask you to describe the scope of impact, root cause, timeline, mitigation and remediation, as well as commission an independent vulnerability assessment and penetration test. We help you organize the evidence you have, identify what still needs investigation and assess the application within an agreed scope.

A test can identify and validate vulnerabilities within its scope; it cannot prove that no vulnerabilities exist. Shopify determines whether the submitted materials satisfy its request.

02Coverage

What we test

We examine the incident path and agreed app attack surface: authentication, store and role isolation, API authorization, selected business flows, webhooks, app proxy, storefront components and externally exposed app-owned services. We combine manual testing with automated checks and document coverage and limitations.

  • Incident path re-test
  • Authentication
  • Store & role isolation
  • API authorization
  • Business logic
  • Webhooks
  • App proxy
  • Extensions
  • TLS & external surface

Infrastructure testing is limited to agreed app-owned hosts. Source code and cloud configuration are reviewed only when access is provided and included in scope.

03Deliverables

What you receive

A signed VAPT report with verified findings, evidence, severity and remediation guidance; an incident report draft based on records you provide; an executive summary; and one retest of confirmed findings within the agreed scope. The retest addendum records which findings were resolved, remain open or could not be verified. Your team reviews and approves the incident report before submitting it.

  1. Technical VAPT reportDates, methodology, scope and exclusions, confirmed findings, severity, evidence, recommendations and status. Signed by the independent tester.
  2. Executive summaryA short, non-technical overview for leadership and correspondence.
  3. Incident report draftImpact, root cause or clearly marked uncertainty, timeline, containment, remediation and prevention, built from your records. Unknowns are stated with a plan to verify them.
  4. Submission planWhich materials to prepare for Shopify. You approve and send them yourself.
  5. Retest addendumOne retest of confirmed findings within 30 days of the original report.

04Scope

Defined scope

One app, one backend/API, up to 30 agreed endpoints, two test stores and up to three roles. Testing boundaries, dates and access are agreed before work starts. A VAPT tests the current app; a separate forensic investigation may be needed to establish what happened in the past. Fix implementation and forensics are not included.

If fixes are not ready within 30 days, an extension and its price are agreed separately. Data recovery and legal opinions are not included. See Shopify app penetration testing pricing for a side-by-side comparison.

05Timing

§Methodology

Tools and methodology

We use manual testing and selected automated tools to examine the agreed app, API and infrastructure. The report explains how each finding was verified and which parts of the scope were not tested. Tools support the assessment; they do not replace independent review.

Our approach is guided by the OWASP Web Security Testing Guide and ASVS as references, applied to the scope we agree with you.

Established tools, plus our own AI-assisted analysis

Alongside established testing tools, we use AI-assisted analysis tooling that we develop in-house for Shopify app patterns. It helps us map routes and data flows, compare how store context is checked across endpoints and flag candidate cross-store or webhook issues for closer review.

AI output is a lead, not a finding. Every issue in our reports is reproduced manually by a tester, and the report states how it was verified. Confidential material is not sent to third-party AI services without your written agreement.

Tools we may use, depending on scope and access
HTTP and API testing
Burp Suite Professional, OWASP ZAP
Template-based checks
Nuclei
Ports and TLS
Nmap, testssl.sh
Authorized asset inventory
Subfinder, httpx
Dependencies (with source access)
npm audit, composer audit, Trivy
Secrets (with source access)
Gitleaks, TruffleHog
Shopify-specific patterns
In-house Shopify app checklist, In-house AI-assisted analysis tooling

Not every tool runs in every engagement. Source code and cloud configuration are reviewed only when you provide access and it is part of the agreed scope. External services are used only with permission and never receive your secrets.

Already fixed the issues from another report?

Our retest and evidence pack verifies up to 10 findings from an existing report.
